Synopsis: A secret society plans to overthrow the Qing Dynasty to resume the Ming monarchy, along with the help of many other martial clans. But the Qing government learns of their plans and sets out to stop them. One of the Kuang Wah members is forced to cut-off an arm and framed for murder when another one-armed swordsman appears on the scene. The pair soon meet, and after a brief battle decide to join forces to bring down the Qing's and exact revenge on those that disabled them. (85 Mins)
Views: Although Point The Finger Of Death features the late Jimmy Wang Yu in yet another one-armed role, the film itself is not connected to either his One-Armed Swordsman or One-Armed Boxer series. Instead, this stand-alone movie tells the tale of Chi Chu Chang (Wang Yu), a disciple of the Kuang Wah Society who has been sent on a mission to recruit new patriots after the organisation failed to overthrow the Manchu's. But on his travels, Chi steps in to save a lady from being raped only to find himself attacked by those he interrupted. After stabbing his arm with a poison dart, Chi is forced to cut-off his limb to save his life – but soon finds himself framed for the rape of the woman and murder of other Kuang Wah members, which angers his society brothers who set-out to hunt him down. Chi Chu Chang soon meets another one-armed swordsman called Lu Tuen Chu, a fighter who is out for revenge against the very same people that have put Chi in the same position. They pair soon make a deal to join forces and take revenge on the Qing, as well as the Kuang Wah traitors and the evil Lord Hu Ta!
Much like the independently produced One-Armed Swordsmen from the year before, which was directed by and starred both Jimmy Wang Yu and David Chiang, Point The Finger Of Death was another attempt to cash-in on Wang Yu's two most popular movies with the star co-directing once again. This time though, Wang Yu gains the support of another Shaw Brothers star in the shape of the wonderful Lau Kar Wing, who co-stars and choreographs the fight action respectively, with the film also starring a small number of Shaw Brothers actors and decent cast overall. This would be one of seven roles that Jimmy Wang Yu would have completed in 1977 alongside films such as Lantern Street, Deadly Silver Spear, Double Double Cross, and Return Of The Chinese Boxer. Interestingly enough, Wang Yu's career would significantly slowdown soon after with only two films produced the following year, before only making one in 1979, and only nine from 1983 to 1993 – most of which were extended cameo roles in films such as Fantasy Mission Force, Shanghai 13, Millionaires Express, and Island Of Fire. It's clear that the star had pretty much exhausted himself since entering the film industry in 1965, going on to star in over 80 films as well as directing 10 (and maybe more) with The Chinese Boxer being his first and Return Of The Chinese Boxer his last. Wang Yu would be coaxed out of retirement in 2011 to star in and face-off against the great Donnie Yen in the amazing Wu Xia (Dragon), going onto make appearances in films like The Guillotines, Soul, and Lets Go! - before stepping back out of the limelight once again only a couple of years later. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, Jimmy Wang Yu passed away only last week – April 5th 2022 – which marked the end of this great man's journey and saddened many of us fans around the world. Thankfully though, the star left us many great movies to enjoy and clearly led enough of an exciting life that will make sure he is remembered forever...
Lau Kar Wing, who had followed his older brother and father into the film industry just a couple of years before Wang Yu, stars as the second one-armed swordsman of the story and doubles-up as the fight choreographer bringing viewers a healthy array of fun fight scenes. Having appeared as one of the fighters against Wang Yu in One-Armed Boxer Vs The Flying Guillotine just the year before, Lau knew what to expect from the star. While it wasn't as busy a year for Wing as it was for Wang, he certainly had enough on his plate along with his directorial debut He Has Nothing But Kung Fu, of which he also choreographed and co-starred in alongside Gordon Liu. The wonderful Leung Kar Yan appears as Pan Keung Yan, the wicked sect leader who slaughtered Lau Kar Wing's family, cut off his arm, and kidnapped his baby brother to bring him up as his own. While he appears throughout the whole film, Leung saves the most of his moves until his final battle where he faces off against Wing and his little brother in a fight to the death. Lung Fei, the prolific Taiwanese actor and regular of many Wang Yu movies, appears as the evil Lord Hu Ta – the leader of the Qing forces who gets to face-off (once again) against Wang Yu in a fun battle. I always enjoy seeing Lung on-screen, and especially in Jimmy Wang Yu movies, with the actors having shared the screen countless times over the years in films such as The Brave & The Evil, Magnificent Chivalry, Invincible Sword, One-Armed Boxer, 10 Fingers Of Steel, Seaman No.7, Beach Of The War Gods, and many more. The brilliant Philip Ko Fei pops up for a brief fight, with Ricky Cheng and Yueh Feng appearing as Lama monks. Popular kung-fu star Champ Wang, from films such as Iron Ox The Tigers Killer, Clutch Of Power, Lady Constables, Devil Killer, and Pink Force Commando, co-stars as the heroic fighter that brings the two one-armed men together, and Taiwanese actor Hsi Hsiang (aka Jason King) stars as the adult version of Kar Wing's young brother.
While it certainly doesn't have the polish and production values of Wang Yu's Shaw Brother's and Golden Harvest efforts, Point The Finger Of Death still makes for a fun watch and is decently directed by Jimmy Wang Yu and Chin Sheng En. Chin was a film journeyman who directed films such as The First Swordsman, Duel With Samurai, 8 Dragon Swords, One-Armed Swordswoman, and Iron Ox The Tiger Killer, with his final film as director being 1989's The Powerful Men starring Robert Mak, Mark Long, and Pai Ying, and although he wasn't the greatest director in the world, he still makes an enjoyable enough piece with this one which, like many other titles of this era, it was simply just a product of its time. Still, fans of Jimmy Wang Yu and his one-armed characters, Lau Kar Wing, or old-school kung-fu flicks will certainly get a kick out of Point The Finger Of Death – perhaps more suited to it's other title of One Arm Chivalry Fights Against One Arm Chivalry!
Overall: Typical one-armed Wang Yu fun, Point The Finger Of Death has plenty going on to keep fans watching!
